Here’s how you can make the most out of the LinkedIn algorithm

LinkedIn recently shared some AMAZING insights into their algorithm and what they want to see on the platform (literally couldn’t be more helpful, right?). We thought we’d take it one step further and give you some practical tips and advice so you can make the most of your LinkedIn presence.

LinkedIn tip #1: Sharing your personal updates is all good

In their blog, LinkedIn confirmed that they DO want to see your personal updates, but they need to be relevant. So, what does that mean? LinkedIn isn’t the place to just reshare anything you would put on Instagram or Facebook. The LinkedIn algorithm isn’t looking for your holiday pics, but they do want to see your job updates. Did you get a new position recently? Did you start doing something to help your mental health and work-life balance? Share it!

Here are some go-to’s to share on LinkedIn:

  • Any job updates: new job, hiring, promotion, or a project you are involved in at work.
  • Something personal growth-related that you want to celebrate: graduating from university, completing a course, attending a networking or industry event, or sharing behind the scenes of a meeting.

LinkedIn tip #2: Engage in authentic conversation

We know you are probably so over hearing the word authentic by now, but on LinkedIn, it is super important. LinkedIn has said that authentic conversation is what they are looking for. They are sick of the engagement baiting posts that have risen in popularity over the years, and they want LinkedIn to be a place of discussion that genuinely interests its users. They gave some examples of encouraging discussion around work from home, mental health, and what productivity actually looks like. This is great info to have, but we’d totally get it if you were left scratching your head on how to ACTUALLY do this. That’s why we’re here! We’ve put together some simple tips on how to engage in authentic conversation on LinkedIn:

  • Share a realistic pic of your work set-up. Not filtered, not cleared up to look perfect, just as it is. Use the caption to talk about how this is how you are working today, and this is the real you. Ask others what their set-up is and if they’ve been having any challenges (e.g. working from home or returning to the office).
  • If you feel comfortable, share an honest post about your struggles with stress and work. This is something that EVERYONE can relate to and is exactly what LinkedIn encourages.
  • Comment on posts from other people that you can strike up a conversation with. Whether the post is on a topic you know a lot about, or it’s something you want to learn you can make good connections this way.
  • Whenever you go to create something for LinkedIn, stop and think, “am I doing this because I think it will get likes or because I genuinely want to share it?”. This is a great rule of thumb for LinkedIn content.

LinkedIn tip #3: ditch those quick win engagement posts

We know this might sound a little confusing, we obviously want you to get engagement, but we want you to do it in the right way. LinkedIn has said multiple times now that they are cracking down on engagement baiting. Engagement baiting on LinkedIn comes in many forms, but the most obvious, and the ones that LinkedIn have openly called out, are:

  • Using polls to get more reach and engagement.
  • Asking users to engage with a post via likes or reactions (e.g. like if you have done this 7 times, heart react if you have never done it).

LinkedIn is incredibly active right now, so there is a lot you can do to get engagement without facing the consequences of using these quick wins. For example:

  • Engage insightfully with others by putting some thought behind your comments and try to create a conversation.
  • Share real and honest professional content. Everything from celebrating a win to opening up about a mistake you made: your career journey and personal growth are perfect things to share.
  • Share any interesting articles you find with a comment asking for other people’s opinions on them. Do they love it or hate it? Do they relate to it? Time to find out!

Some great topics to pull from are:

  • Imposter syndrome
  • Working from home
  • Returning to the office
  • Frontline work
  • Celebrating a win
  • Current world events
  • Juggling work and family
  • Starting a new job struggles
  • Taking a leap of faith
  • And so many more!
