Instagram Expands Testing of Its 90 Second Reels + 3 More Digital Updates You Need to See

Digital Updates

We’ve seen some MAJOR digital marketing updates recently with big buyouts and testing of new tools across the main platforms. No matter how you use social media for your biz, you need to be on top of the changes; that’s why we’ve brought all the need to know info to one place for you!

Ready to see what’s been happening? Let’s look at the latest digital updates and what they mean for you and your biz.

Instagram has expanded its testing of 90 second Reels

Instagram first started testing this feature way back in February, but most of us didn’t have access to it; that’s all changed with this latest expansion! Lots of users (including us, as we noticed over the weekend YAY) have recently been given the option to film reels up to 90 seconds long.

While it still isn’t available to everyone just yet, this is another big step toward a video-centric feed. As we have already seen, Instagram is pushing for video content to be the focus, especially with its rumoured upcoming immersive feed.

We love the idea of having more time to play with in our Reels; what do you think? Will you be using this extra time?

Rumour has it TikTok is testing a favourites button

Now, this could be interesting! Some users have seen a brand new feature on their TikTok For You Page; a favourites button! This is all in the testing phase at the moment, but it looks like the feature will allow users to favourite videos they see so they can come back to them later. We all know the pain of wanting to show someone that hilarious TikTok we saw only to lose it to the FYP refreshing, so this could come in handy!

Whether it’s to keep track of trends to use for your biz account or just to keep videos you want to re-watch over and over, we have our fingers crossed for this to be expanded!

Elon Musk has bought Twitter; so what’s next?

In some major news, Twitter has accepted Elon Musk’s $44b takeover bid. This has come as a surprise, given Twitter’s own efforts to stop the takeover using a ‘poison pill mitigation process’. Elon looks set to shake things up at Twitter with three major changes he wants to make.

Firstly, he looks set to ‘restore free speech’ on the app after his past criticism of the silencing of particular users on the platform. How he will do this is unclear, but he has been very vocal about the silencing of users, so change is expected to come.

Second, he wants to make the Twitter algorithm transparent. Elon wants users of the app to understand exactly what happens behind the scenes. As he stated:

“Any changes to people’s tweets – if they’re emphasised or de-emphasised – that action should be made apparent, so anyone can see that that action has been taken so there’s no sort of behind-the-scenes manipulation, either algorithmically or manually.”

Lastly, he wants to tackle the problem of bots. Elon has stated that if he was successful in his bid, then he would ‘defeat the spam bots’. No one likes the spambots, we definitely don’t, but how he will do this is still unclear.

There’s a lot happening at Twitter! We will be watching closely to see what happens next.

Facebook is removing its support for podcasts

Big news for podcast users! After only very recently putting its support behind podcasts with display and support options, it seems Facebook is pulling the plug. It has been reported that Facebook will remove all of its podcast services by June 3 and it will stop allowing people to add podcasts this week.

Were you sharing your podcasts on Facebook? Let us know where you will be sharing them now!

Well, that’s it for the big digital updates of this past week! Phew, that was a lot! There’s always SO much happening in the digital marketing world so if you want the latest updates sent directly to you, sign up for our newsletter here.
