Need help running your business? Here’s where to start before hiring or outsourcing.

Behind The Scenes

POST WRITTEN BY:

Imagine if you could run your business without having to do any of the things you hate. It would be pretty life-changing, right? Well, it is possible, but it’s going to require some hiring or outsourcing of different responsibilities to get there.

This is how we run Oh My Digital, but it’s taken time to achieve this. Let’s break down how we’ve done it so you can get there even faster.

But first, I have to make a confession; there is no way I would have lasted 7 years in this business without having Hayley as my business partner.

The best thing about running a company with two Directors?

We have very different strengths and interests, so we get to split up our responsibilities based on our strong suits.

In other words, we both get to run this business without having to do any of the things we really hate.

So how can you achieve this too, even as a solo director?

Let’s dive in:

Step 1: Work out what you actually enjoy doing AND are good at in your business

For Hayley, this looks like: systems & processes, organising events, short-form content and brand development.

For Katy, it’s: finance & legals, anything that comes in the form of a spreadsheet, people management, long-form content and design.

Make a ‘love’ and ‘hate’ list of all the tasks you normally take care of on your business, then you can start working towards finding an expert advisor, outsourcing, or hiring to shrink down that ‘hate’ list slowly.

And the best part? When these tasks are delegated or supported by someone who DOES love them? You’ll start getting wayyyy better outcomes.

Step 2: Prioritise giving up the tasks that will bring the greatest ROI first

Next, it’s time to prioritise what to move off your list first. We know one of the biggest barriers to getting more help is that chicken and egg scenario of needing to invest before you can bring more revenue in.

If that’s the case for your business, you might want to focus on the areas that can bring you a short-term ROI first.

Here are some common scenarios we see a lot and what this might look like:

  • If you have lots of customer demand, but can’t service it all, this might mean hiring team members to help you serve more customers at once.
  • If you’re not actively promoting your business because you hate marketing, it might be time to team up with an agency (hi).
  • If you feel like you’re doing a good job in both of these areas but aren’t getting the financial reward you should be, it might be time to investigate a virtual CFO or better accounting team that can help you improve your profitability.

Step 3: Hiring or outsourcing: which one is right for me?

Remember that help can come in different forms. Hiring in-house and growing a team is just ONE of many options.

Here are some of the ways we’ve had help in our business over time:

Working with expert advisors 1:1

This is perfect for highly specialised skills that you need to tap into on a yearly/quarterly basis. For us this includes our legal team at Foundd Legal, Accounting with Rise Accountants, Brand Strategy with Digital Bloom, and lots of ad hoc strategy calls we’ve booked over the years from different experts like Tara Ladd, Jessica Tutton and others.

Outsourcing

Perfect for speciliased skills that you need regular monthly support from in your business. For us this includes our Bookkeeping and BAS Agent Fuel Business Consulting

Hiring an internal team

We hired our first employee in 2021 (about 4 years in to our business!). We now have five incredible internal team members who all deliver client work. This works for us because it allows us to provide a super reliable and consistent quality service to all our client who mostly work with us on a monthly ongoing basis.

Industry Partners

We also partner up with a number of super talented business owners in our field to help deliver client projects when we don’t have all the skills internally. It’s really a win-win as we can help our clients get everything taken care of in one place, while the whole creative team gets to work in their genious zone and deliver excellent quality work. Shout out to Ola Digital, Digital Bloom, Read City Writing, Heidi Lou Design and Amanda Jane Copy.

We hope you’re feeling inspired to start getting more support in your business after reading this!
