Instagram Downgrades Video Quality for Less-Viewed Clips

Instagram’s Adam Mosseri explained that video quality for Stories and Reels adjusts based on engagement. Lower-viewed videos are displayed in reduced quality, while popular clips are re-rendered in higher quality. This helps allocate resources effectively.

“In general, we want to show the highest quality video we can when someone is watching a Story or Reel. But if something isn’t watched for a long time, we will move to a lower quality video,” Mosseri said.

While the approach favours high-engagement creators, Mosseri noted that video quality “seems to be much more important to the original creator than to their viewers.”
